- In the first case, a 32-year-old man was sentenced to life imprisonment for raping a 14-year-old girl in Lusikisiki. The man, who cannot be named as he has not yet been sentenced, was found guilty of raping the girl in her home in February 2023. The girl was home alone at the time of the attack.
- In the second case, a 28-year-old man was sentenced to life imprisonment for raping a 23-year-old woman in Mthatha. The man, who cannot be named as he has not yet been sentenced, was found guilty of raping the woman in her home in March 2023. The woman was home alone at the time of the attack.
The sentences were handed down by the Mthatha High Court. The judge in the first case said that the man’s actions were “despicable” and that he had “shown no remorse” for his crime. The judge in the second case said that the man’s actions were “abhorrent” and that he had “destroyed” the woman’s life.
The sentences are a reminder that rape is a serious crime that will be punished severely. They also send a message to potential rapists that they will not be tolerated in South Africa.
