The BRICS summit in 2023 discussed the expansion of the group, but no decisions were made. There are 19 countries that have applied to join BRICS, and the BRICS countries are still debating how to expand the group and which countries should be admitted.
Some of the countries that are considered to be the most likely candidates to join BRICS in 2024 include:
- Argentina
- Egypt
- Indonesia
- Iran
- Saudi Arabia
- South Korea
- Turkey
- United Arab Emirates
These countries are all large, emerging economies with significant political and economic clout. They are also all members of the BRICS New Development Bank (NDB), which suggests that they are already aligned with the BRICS countries on some key issues.
However, it is also possible that BRICS will not expand in 2024. The BRICS countries are still divided on the issue, and it is possible that they will not be able to reach a consensus. It is also possible that the BRICS countries will decide to expand the group in a smaller way, by admitting only a few new members.
Only time will tell which countries will join BRICS in 2024. The decision will depend on a number of factors, including the outcome of the debate among the BRICS countries, the political and economic conditions in the world, and the willingness of the applicant countries to meet the BRICS’ membership criteria.
