Gauteng: The Place Where Families and Friends Reunite. South Africans Take 25 Million Trips Across the Country, with Gauteng the Top Destination

Gauteng was the most visited province in South Africa in 2022, with over 25 million domestic tourist trips. It’s no wonder, really. Gauteng is home to the country’s two largest cities, Johannesburg and Pretoria, and is a melting pot of cultures from all over South Africa.

But what’s the main reason people visit Gauteng? To see their loved ones, of course! According to Stats SA’s Domestic Tourism Survey for 2022, the majority of visitors to Gauteng, both day trippers and overnight tourists, were there to visit family and friends.

The Western Cape was the second most popular province for domestic visitors in 2022, followed by Limpopo and KwaZulu-Natal. The Free State was the least visited province. Interestingly, while most South Africans traveled to Gauteng for their vacations, Gauteng residents themselves were more likely to head to Limpopo and KwaZulu-Natal.

So, what’s the draw of Limpopo and KZN for Gauteng residents? Perhaps it’s the stunning scenery, the rich wildlife, or the laid-back atmosphere. Whatever the reason, it’s clear that South Africans love to travel, and they love to visit their families and friends even more.
