Morocco coach Walid Regragui has tipped Bafana Bafana to impress at the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) tournament in Ivory Coast. Bafana Bafana have been drawn in Group C alongside defending champions Algeria, Ivory Coast, and Equatorial Guinea.
Regragui, who was speaking after Morocco’s 2-1 defeat to Bafana Bafana in their final Afcon qualifier on Saturday, said he was impressed by the South Africans’ performance. “I’m delighted to see Bafana Bafana’s resurgence,” Regragui said. “They have a good team with a lot of potential. I think they can surprise a few people at Afcon.”
Bafana Bafana have not won the Afcon title since 1996, but they have reached the final on three occasions since then. They will be hoping to go one better in Ivory Coast next year, and Regragui believes they have the potential to do so.
“They have a good mix of experience and youth,” Regragui said. “They also have some very talented players, like Percy Tau and Bongani Zungu. I think they can be a dark horse at Afcon.”
Bafana Bafana’s Afcon campaign will begin on January 13, 2024, when they take on Algeria in their opening group match.
