The Nelson Mandela Foundation fired its CEO Sello Hatang

On Wednesday, June 28, 2023, following an investigation into complaints about his personal conduct in the workplace. The foundation’s chairperson, Professor Njabulo Ndebele, said the dismissal followed an internal investigation into Hatang’s conduct, which he described as “unbecoming” and “distressing” to the foundation and its stakeholders. Ndebele would not elaborate on the nature of the complaints, but said they had been received shortly after Hatang announced his resignation in May.
Hatang had been CEO of the foundation since 2014. He is a former journalist and government spokesperson. In a statement, Hatang said he was “deeply disappointed” by the foundation’s decision to fire him, and that he would be challenging it in court. He denied any wrongdoing, and said he had been “treated unfairly” by the foundation.
The Nelson Mandela Foundation is a non-profit organization that was established in 1994 to promote the legacy of Nelson Mandela. It is based in Johannesburg, South Africa.
