Lacina Koné, director general of Smart Africa, believes that these three factors will shape Africa’s digital future.
- Youth talent: Africa is the youngest continent in the world, and its youth are increasingly tech-savvy. This abundance of talent will be essential for Africa to compete in the global digital economy.
- Representative datasets: Africa’s data is currently underrepresented in AI datasets, which can lead to biased results. However, efforts are underway to collect and curate African data, which will make AI more fair and representative.
- Cybersecurity: As Africa becomes more digital, it is important to invest in cybersecurity. Koné believes that Africa can become a leader in cybersecurity, thanks to its young and talented population.
Koné also sees the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) as an opportunity to boost digital trade and create a single digital market for Africa. He believes that Smart Africa can play a role in harmonizing trade policies and developing a digital trade ecosystem for the continent.
In addition to infrastructure, Koné believes that affordability is key to increasing the use of digital technology in Africa. He also calls for greater emphasis on local content and cyber hygiene.
Overall, Koné is optimistic about Africa’s digital future. He believes that technology and AI have the potential to benefit Africa more than any other continent.
